Nonexchanging

Nonexchanging is an adjective used to describe something that does not participate in an exchange of matter, energy, information, or value with another party or system. The term is used across disciplines to distinguish processes, components, or interactions that do not swap properties from those that do.

In chemistry and geoscience, the concept is often encountered in discussions of ion exchange. Many ions adsorb to surfaces of minerals or soils and can be displaced by other ions in solution.
