Nollaalleelit

Nollaalleelit, often translated as null alleles or amorphic alleles, represent a class of genetic variations where a gene completely loses its function. This loss of function can occur due to various mutations, such as deletions that remove the entire gene, frameshift mutations that disrupt the reading frame and lead to a non-functional protein, or missense mutations that result in a protein product that is unstable or incapable of performing its intended task. In essence, a nollaalleeli results in no functional protein being produced by the gene.

The phenotypic consequences of nollaalleelit depend on whether the gene is essential for survival or development, and whether the organism is diploid or haploid. In diploid organisms, if the gene is not essential and a functional copy exists on the homologous chromosome (i.e., it's a recessive trait), the individual may not exhibit any observable phenotype. However, if the gene is dominant, or if both copies are nollaalleelit (homozygous recessive), the absence of gene product will lead to a distinct trait or disease. In some cases, nollaalleelit can be lethal if the gene product is absolutely required for the organism's viability.
