Nojpetén
Nojpetén, also known as Tayasal, was the last independent Maya city-state to fall to the Spanish conquistadors. Located on an island in Lake Petén Itzá in modern-day Guatemala, it was the capital of the Itza kingdom. The city flourished for centuries, developing complex architecture and a sophisticated political system.
The Spanish first encountered Nojpetén in 1618, but their initial attempts to conquer the city were unsuccessful.
The eventual fall of Nojpetén occurred in 1697. After a protracted siege and with superior weaponry and
