Nkuringo

Nkuringo is a sector within the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda, renowned for its gorilla trekking experiences. It is one of the four sectors of the park open to tourists for encountering mountain gorillas, alongside Buhoma, Rushaga, and Ruhija. Nkuringo is known for its slightly more challenging terrain compared to other sectors, often involving steeper ascents and descents, which can offer a more physically engaging trekking adventure.

The Nkuringo gorilla sector is home to several habituated gorilla families, including the Nkuringo family itself, which was one of the first to be habituated in the area. This habituation process allows tourists to observe gorillas in their natural habitat for a limited time, typically one hour, under the guidance of experienced trackers and rangers. The sector's location provides stunning panoramic views of the Virunga Mountains and the Great Rift Valley.

Access to Nkuringo is typically via Kisoro town, which has an airstrip for chartered flights, or by road from Kampala or Kigali. Accommodation options range from budget lodges to more upscale guesthouses situated both within and on the outskirts of the park. The unique landscape and the opportunity to see gorillas make Nkuringo a significant destination for ecotourism in Uganda. The revenue generated from gorilla permits sold in Nkuringo contributes to conservation efforts and community development projects in the surrounding areas.
