Njene

Njene is a small town located in the western part of the central highlands. It serves as the administrative centre of Njene District and falls within the jurisdiction of the Midlands Province. The town is situated approximately 45 kilometres southwest of the provincial capital and sits at an elevation of around 1,250 metres above sea level, which gives it a temperate climate characterised by cool winters and warm summers.

The history of Njene dates back to the mid‑19th century, when it was established as a mission station by German missionaries. During the colonial era it evolved into a trading post that facilitated the exchange of agricultural produce and livestock between local communities and larger market towns. After independence in 1980, the town was officially recognised as a municipality and subsequently developed a network of primary and secondary schools, a community health centre and a small commercial area.

The population of Njene is estimated at roughly 8,500 residents, according to the 2023 national census. The demographic composition is predominantly of the local ethnic group, with a minority of migrants from neighbouring provinces. Swahili is widely spoken, alongside the indigenous language of the region.

Njene’s economy is largely agrarian. The surrounding hills support subsistence farming of maize, beans and root crops, while cattle rearing constitutes a significant source of income for many households. In recent years, there has been a modest expansion of small-scale retail and service businesses aimed at meeting the needs of the growing populace. The town’s cultural life is punctuated by traditional music, dance, and several annual festivals that celebrate agricultural harvests and communal heritage.
