Nitridien

Nitridien is a term that appears in some French-language chemical literature and does not have a single, standardized definition in the way that more established terms do. In practice, its meaning is context dependent and can vary among authors, disciplines, and historical periods. As a result, nitridien is more a label used in certain texts than a rigorously defined chemical class.

In inorganic and organometallic chemistry, some authors encounter nitridien as a way to refer to a nitrogen-centered fragment associated with a metal, sometimes in a broader sense including nitrido (N3−) ligands or other nitrogen-containing units bound to metals. In organic and physical chemistry contexts, other authors may use nitridien to describe nitrogen-centered fragments related to nitrenes (neutral R–N:) or to nitrenium-type species (charged nitrogen fragments such as R2N+), again with the exact meaning depending on the discussion.

Key ideas that underlie many uses of the term, when it appears, are the involvement of a reactive nitrogen center and the association with species that are often short-lived or highly reactive.
