Nissankamalla

Nissankamalla was a king of Polonnaruwa, a kingdom in ancient Sri Lanka. He reigned from 1187 to 1196 CE. He succeeded his uncle, King Parakramabahu I, and his reign is notable for its extensive building projects and administrative reforms.

Nissankamalla was known for his military prowess and his efforts to strengthen the kingdom's defenses. He initiated the construction of several important structures, including the Nissankalatiraya, a large stupa, and the Hata-dage, a relic shrine. He also commissioned the Vatadage, a circular relic house, which was renovated and expanded during his rule.

His administrative policies aimed at improving the welfare of his subjects. He is credited with instituting measures to provide medical care and relief to the poor and the sick. He also organized public works projects, such as the construction of canals and irrigation systems, to boost agricultural productivity.

Nissankamalla's reign, though relatively short, was a period of significant development in Polonnaruwa. He is remembered as a benevolent ruler who focused on both the spiritual and material well-being of his kingdom. His contributions to architecture and governance left a lasting impact on Sri Lankan history.
