Hatadage

Hatadage is an ancient brick and stone shrine located in Polonnaruwa, the second ancient capital of Sri Lanka. It was built by King Vijayabahu I in the 11th century. The structure is believed to have been used to house the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, a highly revered artifact in Sri Lankan Buddhism.

The Hatadage is a relatively small building, but its construction is notable for the use of both brick and stone. The main chamber is circular and houses a statue of Buddha. The exterior walls are decorated with intricate carvings and stucco work, though much of this has deteriorated over time. The entrance to the shrine is guarded by two stone figures, likely meant to be protective deities.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Hatadage underwent several phases of construction and modification throughout its history. It was part of a larger complex of religious and royal buildings in Polonnaruwa, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite its age and exposure to the elements, the Hatadage remains a significant historical and religious monument, offering insights into the architectural and artistic styles of the Polonnaruwa period. Visitors can still observe the remaining structures and appreciate the craftsmanship of its builders.
