Nimistöntutkimus, or onomastics in English, is the academic study of proper names. The study of personal names, anthroponymy, investigates naming conventions, the historical shifts in popular names, and the cultural factors influencing name choices. Toponymy focuses on the etymology and history of place names, often revealing historical events, geographical features, or the presence of past inhabitants. Other subfields include ethnonymy (study of ethnic group names) and, more recently, the study of names in digital environments.

Onomastic research contributes to our understanding of language development, migration patterns, cultural identity, and even the psychology of naming. It provides insights into how societies categorize and identify individuals, places, and concepts, and how these identifiers reflect broader societal changes and beliefs. The field utilizes various methodologies, including linguistic analysis, historical document research, and sometimes even fieldwork.
