The name Nimbora is imagined to derive from the Nimbari language; local folklore attributes it to the nimbo cloud phenomenon, reflecting the frequent sea mists surrounding the harbor.

Nimbora traces its origins to a fishing village established in the 12th century. It grew as a harbor town during the maritime era and underwent modernization after the industrial period, with rebuilding following a cyclone in 1878.
