Nikkelilähteillä, also known as nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, are a type of rechargeable battery that uses nickel oxide hydroxide as the cathode and metallic cadmium as the anode. They are known for their high energy density, long cycle life, and ability to handle high discharge currents. NiCd batteries are commonly used in applications such as power tools, electric vehicles, and portable electronic devices.

The primary advantage of NiCd batteries is their ability to maintain a consistent voltage throughout their discharge cycle, which makes them suitable for applications that require a stable power supply. They also have a relatively low self-discharge rate, which means they can retain their charge for extended periods when not in use.

However, NiCd batteries have some drawbacks. They are sensitive to overcharging, which can lead to reduced capacity and potential safety hazards. Additionally, the use of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, raises environmental concerns. Due to these issues, NiCd batteries have largely been replaced by nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in many applications.

Despite their decline in popularity, NiCd batteries remain in use in certain niche applications where their unique characteristics are advantageous. They are also still produced and sold, although in smaller quantities compared to other battery types.
