Nighteconomy refers to the portion of a city’s economic activity that takes place during nighttime hours. It encompasses sectors such as hospitality (bars, clubs, restaurants), entertainment venues, late-night retail, transportation, media, and cultural institutions, along with the supporting infrastructure and services (security, lighting, waste management, staffing and scheduling) that enable after-hours operation. The concept also includes the labor force employed in these sectors, often involving shift work and gig arrangements, and the nighttime demand that sustains them.

The size and character of the nighteconomy depend on urban density, cultural life, tourism, licensing regimes, and public services such as transit and policing. In many cities, the nighteconomy is concentrated around designated districts with late operating hours, but digital platforms and flexible scheduling are extending activity later into the night. Policymakers aim to capture economic benefits—employment, tax revenue, and nighttime vitality—while mitigating negative externalities such as noise, crime, alcohol-related harm, and crowding.

Measurement approaches vary, but common indicators include employment share in night-time sectors, gross value added during night hours, and late-evening consumer footfall. Governance approaches range from flexible licensing and late-night transit to dedicated night-time economy plans or “night mayors” coordinating cross-agency efforts. Cultural factors and urban design, including lighting and safe passive surveillance, influence perceptions of safety and desirability.

Overall, the nighteconomy is a strategic component of many cities’ economic and social life, reflecting opportunities and trade-offs in balancing vitality with livability.
