Nietgeïoniseerd refers to a state where an atom or molecule has not lost or gained any electrons, thus maintaining a neutral electrical charge. Ionization, the process by which an atom or molecule acquires a net charge, involves the removal or addition of electrons. When an atom is ionized, it becomes an ion. A non-ionized atom, therefore, is one that exists in its most stable, electrically neutral form under given conditions. This state is fundamental to understanding chemical bonding and molecular behavior. For example, in a neutral molecule of water, the oxygen atom and the two hydrogen atoms are not ionized; they share electrons through covalent bonds, but the overall molecule has no net charge. The term is often used in contrast to ionized forms in various scientific contexts, such as in plasma physics where the degree of ionization is a critical parameter, or in biochemistry when discussing the charge state of molecules in biological systems. The non-ionized state is generally the default state for most elements and compounds under standard atmospheric conditions.
