Nichtmonogamy

The term "nichtmonogamy" is the German word for non-monogamy, reflecting its broader cultural relevance in some regions.

Polyamory, a specific form of ENM, involves multiple loving, romantic relationships with the knowledge and consent of all partners. Open relationships allow for sexual intimacy with others while maintaining a primary partnership, often with agreed-upon boundaries. Swinging, another form, typically involves couples who exchange partners for sexual activity.

Not all non-monogamous relationships are consensual or ethical; practices such as cheating or infidelity violate trust and differ from structured non-monogamy.
