Nichtkontaktinstrumente, also known as contactless instruments, are devices that measure or detect physical properties without direct physical contact with the object being measured. This non-contact nature offers several advantages, including the ability to measure objects in hazardous environments, moving objects, or objects that are sensitive to touch. They also prevent contamination and wear on both the instrument and the object.

The principle of operation for non-contact instruments varies widely depending on the physical property being measured. For instance, optical instruments use light waves, such as infrared or laser, to detect temperature, distance, or surface characteristics. Thermal imaging cameras, for example, detect infrared radiation emitted by an object to create a visual representation of its temperature distribution. Laser distance sensors use the time-of-flight of a laser pulse or phase shift of reflected light to determine the distance to an object.

Other non-contact measurement methods include acoustic techniques, where sound waves are used to measure distance or detect internal flaws. Ultrasonic sensors emit sound pulses and measure the time it takes for the echo to return, allowing for distance calculation. Electromagnetic principles are also employed, for instance, in eddy current sensors that detect the presence and position of conductive materials by inducing eddy currents. Inductive proximity sensors detect metallic objects without physical contact by creating a magnetic field. These instruments are crucial in automation, quality control, and research across various industries.
