Nichtgenomischer

Nichtgenomischer is a German adjective derived from nicht (not) and genomisch (genomic). In scientific usage, it describes material or elements that do not originate from or are not encoded by an organism’s nuclear genome. The term is common in genetics, molecular biology, and genomics to distinguish such elements from the main chromosomal genome.

Applications and examples

Nichtgenomische DNA refers to DNA elements that reside outside the nuclear genome. Typical examples are plasmids and other extrachromosomal vectors in bacteria, which replicate independently of the host chromosome. Viral genomes that persist outside the host’s chromosomal DNA, at least temporarily, can also be described as nichtgenomisch. Organellar genomes, such as those of mitochondria and chloroplasts, are technically separate genomes from the nuclear genome, and may be discussed as nichtgenomisch relative to the nuclear genome, though they are full genetic systems of their own.

Context and usage

The term emphasizes a distinction between genetic material encoded in the main genome and other genetic or molecular elements present in cells. It is more common in German-language literature; in English, non-genomic or extrachromosomal are more typical equivalents, depending on context. Nichtgenomisch can also apply to sequences or materials identified in sequencing or metagenomics analyses that are not mapped to a host nuclear genome.
