Neuerwerb

Neuerwerb is a German term used in libraries, archives, and museums to denote a recently acquired item that has been added to a collection. The word combines neu ("new") and Erwerb ("acquisition") and is used to distinguish newly obtained materials from existing holdings. In practice, it refers to items that have passed selection and funding processes and have been accessioned into the institution's catalog.

Acquisitions may result from purchase, gift, bequest, donation, endowment, or exchange. The collection development policy guides selection; curators and librarians assess relevance, condition, and access needs. After a decision is made, the item is legally acquired, funded, and physically transferred to the institution, and an acquisition record is created in the catalog with an accession number, provenance, date of acquisition, and cost if applicable.

New acquisitions are integrated into catalogs and finding aids, and depending on policy may be digitized or conserved. Documentation includes provenance, copyright status, notes about condition, and display rights. The term Neuerwerb helps staff track and report recent growth and informs researchers about the most current holdings.

While most common in German-speaking institutions, the concept of a "new acquisition" exists globally and underpins collection development, inventory management, and public transparency.
