Netzwissenschaften, or Network Science in English, is an interdisciplinary academic field that studies complex systems using network theory. It focuses on the analysis of the structure, dynamics, and functions of networks, which are abstract representations of systems composed of nodes (or vertices) and links (or edges) that connect them. These networks can represent a vast array of real-world phenomena, from social relationships and biological interactions to technological infrastructures and information flows.

The core idea of Netzwissenschaften is that the way components are connected significantly influences the behavior of the entire system. Researchers in this field develop and apply mathematical and computational tools to understand properties such as network density, centrality measures, community structures, and the spread of information or disease through networks. In biology, it helps understand protein-protein interaction networks or gene regulatory networks.
