The term is derived from Lithuanian netiesiogiai, meaning indirectly, with the suffix -us forming a noun or adjective in technical usage. In this sense, netiesiogius complements direct influence by focusing on how a node can affect another through sequences of connections.

Conceptually, netiesiogius distinguishes between a direct path of influence and longer, multi-step pathways. In a directed graph, the netiesiogius from node i to node j encompasses the aggregate effect transmitted along paths of length two or more. A common operationalization uses the adjacency matrix A: indirect reach can be thought of as the sum over all directed paths from i to j of products of edge weights along each path, often with a decay factor to downweight longer paths.
