NervGear

The NervGear is a fictional virtual reality full-dive device featured in the anime and light novel series Sword Art Online. Created by Kayaba Akihiko, it is the primary technology that allows players to fully immerse themselves in the virtual world of Aincrad. Unlike previous VR technologies, the NervGear directly interfaces with the user's brainwaves, stimulating all five senses and effectively rendering the user's consciousness entirely within the game. This means that sensations experienced in the virtual world, including pain, are perceived as real by the player. A significant and terrifying feature of the NervGear is its built-in failsafe: if a user attempts to forcibly remove the device or if its power is cut off, it will emit a powerful microwave pulse, fatally damaging the user's brain. This "game over" mechanic was a crucial plot point in the initial arc of Sword Art Online, as players trapped within the game were unable to log out until the final boss was defeated, under threat of death both in-game and in reality. The NervGear is a closed system, meaning once a player logs in, they cannot log out or be removed from the game by external means.
