Nemaia

Nemaia is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Nemaidae. The genus is monotypic, containing only one species, Nemaia veligera. This fish is commonly known as the velvet belly lanternfish or velvet lanternfish. Nemaia veligera is found in the Atlantic Ocean, with its range extending from the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of Brazil. It inhabits deep waters, typically at depths between 200 and 1,000 meters.

The velvet belly lanternfish is characterized by its elongated, slender body and large, luminous organs on its belly. These organs are used for bioluminescence, which is believed to serve as a form of communication or camouflage. The fish feeds on small crustaceans and other planktonic organisms. Its life history and reproductive strategies are not well understood, but it is known to be a slow-growing species.
