Neliylemmät

Neliylemmät is a Finnish-language term used to refer to quadruplets, four offspring born from a single pregnancy. The term appears in some texts and discussions, but it is not standardized in formal Finnish medical terminology. In most medical Finnish sources, quadruplets are described with descriptive phrases rather than a fixed compound word.

Occurrence and causes

Quadruplet pregnancies are extremely rare in natural conceptions. The majority of quadruplets arise with fertility treatment or ovulation-stimulating medications, which increase the likelihood of multiple eggs being released and fertilized. Spontaneous quadruplets can occur but are uncommon, and the exact mechanisms behind a spontaneous fourfold division of an embryo or multiple ovulations are not fully understood.

Health considerations

Quadruplet pregnancies carry higher risks for both mother and babies compared with singleton pregnancies. Common maternal risks include preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, anemia, and increased likelihood of cesarean delivery. For the babies, there is a higher probability of preterm birth, low birth weight, respiratory and feeding difficulties, and longer neonatal hospital stays. Long-term outcomes vary and depend on birth weight, neonatal complications, and access to quality neonatal care.
