Negoiu

Negoiu is a mountain peak located in the Făgăraș Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians in Romania. It is the second highest peak in Romania, reaching an elevation of 2,535 meters (8,317 feet). Negoiu is a popular destination for hikers and climbers, offering challenging routes and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The massif is known for its rugged terrain, glacial lakes, and diverse flora and fauna.

The ascent to Negoiu can be undertaken from several directions, with the most common routes starting from Bâlea Lake or the Capra Lake area. These trails are generally well-marked but require a good level of physical fitness and experience in mountain hiking, especially in adverse weather conditions. The summit area is characterized by scree slopes and rocky outcrops, and safety precautions are essential.

Geologically, the Făgăraș Mountains are composed primarily of crystalline rocks. Negoiu itself is part of a larger massif that includes other significant peaks. The area is a nature reserve, aiming to preserve its unique ecosystem. The glacial formations, such as cirques and U-shaped valleys, are evident throughout the mountain range, testifying to past glacial activity. Access to the region is typically done via the Transfăgărășan highway, a scenic road that traverses the Făgăraș Mountains, though it is only open seasonally.
