Nebelschlussleuchten

Nebelschlussleuchten, often translated as rear fog lights, are a safety feature found on many motor vehicles. Their primary purpose is to enhance visibility of a vehicle from behind when driving in fog, heavy rain, or snowfall that significantly reduces visibility. Unlike standard brake lights, which illuminate only when the brake pedal is pressed, nebelschlussleuchten remain on continuously when activated.

They typically emit a bright red light, making the vehicle more conspicuous to following traffic. This increased visibility is crucial for preventing rear-end collisions in conditions where normal taillights might be obscured. The use of nebelschlussleuchten is generally regulated by law. In many countries, they are only permitted to be used when visibility is reduced to a certain level, typically below 50 meters. Their misuse, such as operating them in clear weather, can be distracting to other drivers and may result in a fine.

The design and intensity of nebelschlussleuchten are standardized to ensure effectiveness without causing undue glare. Modern vehicles often integrate them into the taillight clusters, although some older models may have them as separate, smaller units. Drivers are expected to be aware of the conditions requiring their use and to deactivate them once visibility improves to avoid causing unnecessary annoyance or hazard to other road users.
