Nayikas
Nayikas are the female protagonists or heroines in Sanskrit literature and related Indian literary traditions. The term derives from the Sanskrit root "nay-" meaning to lead or to show, and the suffix "-ika" denoting a female. Nayikas function as central characters in many works such as the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, Mahakavyas (epic poems), and classical drama. They can appear as royal princesses, virtuous women, or mystical figures, and are often depicted in a range of emotional states—from devotion to longing, courage, and distress.
