Naviculectomy

Naviculectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the navicular bone. The navicular bone, also known as the scaphoid bone in the wrist, is one of the eight small carpal bones located in the wrist. In the foot, it is a boat-shaped bone situated between the talus and the cuneiform bones. Naviculectomy is a relatively uncommon procedure and is typically performed when the navicular bone is severely damaged or diseased and cannot be repaired through less invasive methods.

The primary indications for a naviculectomy include severe navicular fractures that are non-union or avascular necrosis, where the bone tissue has died due to lack of blood supply. Other reasons can be chronic arthritis of the navicular bone or significant congenital deformities. The surgery aims to alleviate pain, improve function, and prevent further complications.

During the procedure, an incision is made to access the navicular bone. The surgeon then carefully removes the affected bone. Following removal, the surgeon may reconstruct the foot or ankle using bone grafts or other techniques to maintain structural integrity and support. The exact approach and any reconstructive steps depend on the patient's specific condition and the extent of the bone's damage.

Post-operative care typically involves immobilization of the foot and ankle in a cast or boot to allow for healing. Rehabilitation, including physical therapy, is crucial to regain strength, range of motion, and function. The outcome of a naviculectomy can vary depending on the underlying cause, the success of reconstruction, and the patient's adherence to rehabilitation. Complications, though not common, can include infection, nerve damage, or persistent pain.
