Natriumsulfidi

Natriumsulfidi is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula Na2S. It is the sodium salt of hydrogen sulfide. In its pure form, natriumsulfidi is a colorless solid, but it is often encountered in commerce as hydrated forms, such as natriumsulfidi nonahydrate (Na2S·9H2O), which are typically yellow or reddish due to impurities like polysulfides.

Natriumsulfidi is highly soluble in water and produces alkaline solutions due to hydrolysis. It is a strong reducing agent. The compound is produced industrially by the reduction of sodium sulfate with carbon at high temperatures. It is also a byproduct of the Kraft process used in the production of wood pulp.

Applications of natriumsulfidi are diverse. It is used in the leather industry for the removal of hair from hides and in the textile industry as a reducing agent for sulfur dyes. It also finds use in water treatment as an oxygen scavenger and as a precipitating agent for heavy metals. In metallurgy, it is employed in flotation processes. Natriumsulfidi is also a precursor in the synthesis of other sulfur-containing compounds. Due to its alkaline nature and reactivity, it should be handled with care, as it can cause skin and eye irritation.
