Natriumjodidin

Natriumjodidin, also known as sodium iodide, is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula NaI. It is a white, crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and alcohol. In its pure form, sodium iodide is odorless but can develop a yellowish tint due to oxidation.

In medicine, sodium iodide is used as a source of iodide. It is crucial for thyroid hormone production, and deficiencies in iodine can lead to goiter and other health problems. Sodium iodide solutions can be administered intravenously to treat or prevent iodine deficiency and are sometimes used in diagnostic imaging procedures due to the high atomic number of iodine, which can be detected by X-rays. It also finds use as an expectorant in some cough medicines, although this application is less common today.

Historically, sodium iodide played a significant role in early photographic processes as a component in the preparation of silver iodide, a light-sensitive compound used in photographic emulsions. While its use in mainstream photography has largely been superseded by digital technology and more advanced chemical processes, it remains relevant in certain niche applications and in the study of historical photographic techniques.
