Natriumfeldspa is a small spa municipality located in the Lüneburg Heath region of Lower Saxony, Germany. The town lies approximately 12 kilometres southeast of Celle and is situated at the foot of the Harz foothills, where the soil is particularly rich in natural sodium salts. Its name reflects this heritage: “Natrium” is Latin for sodium, while “feld” references the surrounding saline grasslands, and “spa” denotes the town’s long tradition of therapeutic bathing.

The area covers roughly 23 square kilometres and features a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters and cool summers. The local geography is typified by gently rolling hills, marshy meadows, and a network of small streams that feed the saline springs. A small forested area in the northern part of town provides recreational walking routes.

Natriumfeldspa’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when the first sodium deposits were discovered by local farmers. The extraction of salt became a significant economic activity, and the mineral-rich waters soon attracted visitors seeking health benefits. In 1874 the first thermal bath complex was inaugurated, and by the early 20th century the town had developed into a well-known health resort complete with sanatoriums and leisure facilities. After World War II, the spa industry was nationalised and later returned to private ownership in the 1990s.

Today the economy is dominated by tourism, especially health and wellness tourism, although a small-scale salt mining operation continues to operate on the outskirts. The central attraction is the Natriumfeldspa Wellness Centre, which offers a range of thermal baths, a museum chronicling the town’s salt legacy, and a therapeutic program based on sodium treatments. Other points of interest include a historic church built in 1928 and a weekend market that showcases regional crafts.

The population of Natriumfeldspa is about 3,400 residents, with a demographic profile that includes a mix of retirees, local workers from the salt extraction and hospitality sectors, and a small community of professionals serving the spa industry. The town is well connected by road to Celle and Bremen and is served by regional bus lines that link it to larger urban centres.
