Natriumatomissa

Natriumatomissa refers to the sodium atom in Finnish. Sodium, with the chemical symbol Na and atomic number 11, is a highly reactive alkali metal. In its atomic form, it consists of a nucleus containing 11 protons and typically 12 neutrons, surrounded by 11 electrons. These electrons are arranged in specific energy levels or shells. The electron configuration of a sodium atom is 1s²2s²2p⁶3s¹. This means it has two electrons in the first shell, eight in the second shell, and a single valence electron in the outermost third shell.

This lone valence electron is relatively loosely bound, making sodium eager to lose it to achieve a stable, filled outer electron shell, similar to the noble gas neon. When a sodium atom loses this electron, it forms a positively charged ion, known as a sodium cation (Na⁺). This tendency to readily lose an electron is responsible for sodium's high reactivity, particularly with nonmetals like chlorine, where it readily forms sodium chloride (NaCl), common table salt. In its pure elemental form, sodium is a soft, silvery-white metal that tarnishes rapidly in air and reacts explosively with water.
