Nasaleja

Nasaleja is a term used in phonology to refer to a class of nasalization phenomena that influence the realization of vowels and adjacent consonants in some languages. In scholarly discussions on nasal harmony and coarticulation, nasaleja denotes patterns in which nasality spreads from nasal consonants to neighboring segments or where vowels themselves become nasalized as a result of the surrounding nasals. The concept is not universally standardized and appears primarily in typological or theoretical treatments rather than as a widely adopted phonological rule.

Etymology of nasaleja is not fixed in the literature, but the coinage combines a root related to nasal sound with a suffix often used to form analytic nouns in language studies. The precise historical development of the term is not fixed and is mainly a label used within certain theoretical discussions rather than a firmly established category.

Characteristics of nasaleja encompass two broad tendencies: regressive spreading of nasality onto preceding vowels, producing nasal vowels, and progressive spreading onto following vowels, which can create nasalized vowels in certain contexts. The process often interacts with place of articulation and syllable structure and can be phonotactically restricted in the languages where it is described.

Attestation and usage of nasaleja are largely confined to discussions of constructed languages or hypothetical typologies; in natural languages, related phenomena are more commonly described under nasalization, nasal harmony, or coarticulation rather than under nasaleja. The term thus functions as a descriptive label in specific theoretical contexts rather than a universally adopted phonological rule.

Example: in a hypothetical language, the sequence /na/ may be realized as [nã], illustrating nasal vowelization caused by nasaleja. Across a morpheme boundary, a nasal prefix may leave a nasalized following vowel.
