Nappali

Nappali is the Hungarian term for the living room, a primary communal space in a dwelling used for relaxation, socializing, and hosting guests. In modern Hungarian homes it is often the central room and may be connected to the dining area or kitchen in an open-plan layout described as nappali–étkező or nappali–konyha.

Design and furnishings typically include seating such as sofas and armchairs, a coffee table, and a media area with a television or multimedia devices. Storage and display furniture like shelves or a cabinet, lighting that can include ceiling fixtures and lamps, and textiles such as curtains, rugs, and cushions are common. The arrangement is usually oriented toward conversation or viewing, with clear circulation to other rooms.

The nappali serves daily life and social activities, including family time, reading, and entertaining guests. It may also function as a space for informal work or study in some households.

Variations exist: in older or traditional houses a separate formal living room may be called a fogadószoba or a nappali that is more formal in style. In contemporary apartments open-plan designs are prevalent, and the nappali may be designed to be flexible, with modular seating and responsive lighting.
