Naphthoquinone

Naphthoquinone refers to a class of quinone compounds derived from the naphthalene ring system, in which a quinone moiety is integrated into the fused ring. The two most important isomers are 1,4-naphthoquinone (para-naphthoquinone) and 1,2-naphthoquinone (ortho-naphthoquinone), distinguished by the positions of the carbonyl groups on the ring. Naphthoquinones are typically yellow to orange crystalline solids with limited water solubility, and they are generally soluble in organic solvents. They are redox-active and readily participate in electron transfer reactions, properties that underpin many of their chemical and biological applications.

Natural occurrence and derivatives: Naphthoquinones occur in plants, fungi, and bacteria as parent structures or as substituted derivatives. The naphthoquinone ring also forms the core of vitamin K compounds (phylloquinone and menaquinones), which feature long hydrophobic side chains and are essential nutrients in humans and other animals.

Applications and examples: Naphthoquinones are used as pigments and intermediates in organic synthesis. Several derivatives have pharmaceutical or pharmacological relevance; for example, atovaquone is a clinically used antimalarial agent that contains a naphthoquinone core. Hydroxy- and methoxy-substituted naphthoquinones are studied for antimicrobial, anticancer, and other biological activities, reflecting the broad interest in this class of compounds.
