Nanoplastit

Nanoplastit refers to the presence of nanoplastics in a given material or environment. Nanoplastics are plastic particles smaller than 100 nanometers. This size scale makes them invisible to the naked eye and even standard optical microscopes. Their extremely small size allows them to interact with biological systems and cross biological barriers that larger microplastics cannot.

The formation of nanoplastics is primarily through the degradation of larger plastic items. Environmental factors such as UV radiation, mechanical abrasion, and microbial action break down plastics into progressively smaller fragments. These fragments can originate from a wide range of plastic products, including packaging, textiles, and personal care products.

Concerns surrounding nanoplastics stem from their potential for widespread distribution and their ability to enter food chains and living organisms. Research is ongoing to understand their environmental fate, the mechanisms of their uptake by cells, and their potential toxicological effects on both ecosystems and human health. Due to their minuscule size, detection and quantification in complex environmental matrices like water, soil, and biological tissues present significant analytical challenges.
