Nanonewtonmeters

Nanonewtonmeters are a unit of torque, which is a rotational force. Torque is measured as the force applied multiplied by the distance from the pivot point. The nanonewtonmeter (nNm) is a very small unit of torque, equal to one billionth of a newtonmeter. A newtonmeter (Nm) is the standard SI unit for torque. Therefore, a nanonewtonmeter represents a minuscule amount of rotational force.

To put this into perspective, a nanonewton is already an extremely small unit of force, roughly equivalent to the weight of a tiny speck of dust. Multiplying this tiny force by a very small distance, such as a nanometer (one billionth of a meter), results in an even smaller unit of torque. Nanonewtonmeters are typically used in highly sensitive scientific and engineering applications where extremely precise torque measurements are required. Examples include measuring the torque generated by micro-engines, the rotational forces in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), or the forces involved in the manipulation of individual molecules. The precise control and measurement of such small torques are crucial for the advancement of nanotechnology and micro-scale engineering.
