In Japan, Nankai Electric Railway is a private railway company operating in the Osaka region. It runs several lines, including the Nankai Main Line and the Nankai Kōya Line, and provides access to coastal areas as well as services to Kansai International Airport. The name reflects the company’s historical association with routes along the southern coast of the Kansai region.

In China, Nankai University is a major national university located in Tianjin. Founded in 1919, it is recognized for strengths across science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Nankai District is a central urban district of Tianjin that hosts educational institutions, government offices, and cultural sites; its name shares the same meaning and historical origin as the university.

Geographically, the Nankai Trough is a deep submarine trench located south of Japan, marking the boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is a significant source region for large megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis, contributing to long-standing seismological research and risk assessment.
