Genetic mutations in the gene encoding NaPiIIaIIc can lead to a rare genetic disorder known as X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH). In individuals with XLH, defects in NaPiIIaIIc result in impaired phosphate reabsorption, leading to low levels of phosphate in the blood (hypophosphatemia). This can cause a range of skeletal abnormalities, including rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, characterized by soft and weak bones.
