NVU

NVU, also known as Nvu, was a free and open-source WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It was developed by Disruptive Innovations and was based on the Mozilla Composer component. NVU aimed to provide a user-friendly interface for creating web pages without requiring users to know HTML code directly.

The software featured a visual editing mode where users could format text, insert images, create tables, and add links using familiar toolbar buttons and menus. It also offered a basic HTML source editing mode for those who wanted to work with the code directly. NVU included features for managing websites, such as uploading files via FTP, and offered basic support for CSS.

NVU was released in 2005 and gained a moderate following among web designers and individuals looking for an accessible way to build websites. However, development on NVU effectively ceased around 2007. Despite the lack of official updates, the project's codebase continued to be used as the foundation for several forks and successor projects. One of the most notable of these was KompoZer, which aimed to build upon NVU's features and address some of its limitations. While NVU itself is no longer actively maintained, its legacy can be seen in other open-source web development tools.
