NTSCvarianten

NTSCvarianten refers to the regional and technical variants of the NTSC analog television standard. NTSC was developed in the United States and became widespread in the Americas and parts of Asia. The variants differ mainly in timing, frame structure and color encoding, while broadly sharing the same basic concept for luminance and chrominance signals.

The most common variant is NTSC-M, the standard used in the United States and many other places. It normally specifies 525 lines per frame, interlaced video, and a frame structure of about 29.97 frames per second (with 59.94 fields per second). The color information is encoded on a 3.579545 MHz color subcarrier, with the audio carried on a nearby frequency. NTSC-M thus defines the practical timing and electrical characteristics that TV receivers and video equipment were built to follow in North America.

NTSC-J is the variant used in Japan. It is a regional adaptation of NTSC with adjustments to timing and color encoding to align with domestic broadcasting practices and equipment. In practice, NTSC-J remains compatible with NTSC-type signals on many devices, but certain devices and broadcasts may require region-specific settings or tuners.

Other references to NTSC variants concern color-encoding options such as NTSC 3.58 and NTSC 4.43. NTSC 3.58 (about 3.579 MHz) denotes the standard NTSC color subcarrier. NTSC 4.43 is a non-geographic encoding used by some devices and media formats to handle color information in regions using PAL or mixed standards, enabling cross-region playback.

With the shift to digital television, these NTSC variants are primarily of historical and compatibility interest. Some legacy equipment and media still rely on NTSC timing and subcarrier conventions.
