NSPF

NSPF, the National Swimming Pool Foundation, is a nonprofit organization in the United States that advances safety and knowledge in the pool and spa industry through research funding, education, and certification programs. Its mission is to reduce drownings and injuries by providing science-based resources for pool professionals and the public.

NSPF emerged from mid-to-late 20th century safety initiatives in public and private swimming facilities and has since broadened its remit to fund independent research, disseminate best practices, and oversee professional training. The foundation supports studies on water chemistry, pool design, facility operation, and drowning prevention, and it publishes guidelines and educational materials for industry professionals and consumers.

A central activity is administering the Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) certification, a widely recognized course for pool operators and managers. NSPF also develops resources on sanitation, chemical balance, safety measures, and maintenance protocols, and it maintains partnerships with industry groups and public health agencies to promote safety standards.

Governance is provided by a board of directors, with funding derived from industry contributions, course fees, and philanthropic support. Through its programs and research funding, NSPF aims to inform codes, enhance operator competency, and support public health efforts related to pools and spas.
