NSCLCs

NSCLC stands for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. It is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for approximately 80-85% of all lung cancer diagnoses. NSCLC is a broad category that includes several distinct subtypes, with the most prevalent being adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. These cancers are characterized by cells that look larger and less distinct than those found in small cell lung cancer under a microscope.

The development of NSCLC is strongly linked to smoking, although it can also occur in individuals who have never smoked due to factors like secondhand smoke exposure, radon gas, asbestos, and air pollution. Symptoms of NSCLC can vary and may include a persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up blood, and unexplained weight loss. Early-stage NSCLC may present with no symptoms at all, making regular screenings important for high-risk individuals.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like X-rays and CT scans, followed by a biopsy to examine lung tissue. Treatment approaches for NSCLC are multifaceted and depend on the specific subtype, stage of the cancer, and the patient's overall health. Options can include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy, and immunotherapy. Advances in understanding the molecular characteristics of NSCLC have led to the development of more personalized treatment strategies.
