NPO1

NPO 1 is a Dutch free-to-air television channel that serves as the flagship outlet of the Dutch public broadcasting system, the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO). It operates alongside NPO 2 and NPO 3 as part of the national public-service television network. The channel traces its roots to the early public-broadcasting era and was known for many years as Nederland 1 before being rebranded as NPO 1 in 2013 as part of a broad branding overhaul of the public channels.

Programming on NPO 1 is generalist in nature, featuring a mix of news, current affairs, drama, documentaries, entertainment, and sports. News coverage is provided in partnership with NOS, with major national and international events broadcast on prime time. The channel also airs television dramas, talk shows, reality formats, and various programs produced or commissioned by the public broadcasters that make up the NPO network. The aim is to offer a wide range of high-profile, accessible programming for a broad audience.

Ownership and funding come from the public broadcasting system; NPO coordinates content across its member broadcasters and is primarily funded through government support and public funding mechanisms. Editorial independence is maintained by the individual public broadcasters within the network.

Availability extends across digital terrestrial television in the Netherlands, as well as via cable, satellite, and online platforms. NPO 1 also provides streaming through the NPO Start service, with options for viewing on-demand or live content. As the principal generalist channel in the Netherlands, NPO 1 serves as a central platform for public-interest programming and major national events.
