NMIJ

NMIJ, the National Metrology Institute of Japan, is the national metrology organization responsible for measurement standards, calibration services, and metrology research in Japan. It operates within the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), which is part of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

NMIJ maintains national standards for units and physical quantities, ensures measurement traceability to the International System of Units (SI), and provides calibration, testing, and reference material services to industry, academia, and government. It also develops and disseminates measurement capabilities and participates in international comparisons to ensure compatibility of Japanese measurements with global standards.

Laboratories span fields including length and dimensional metrology, mass and force, time and frequency, electricity and magnetism, temperature, acoustics and vibration, chemistry, radiometry and ionizing radiation, as well as materials and nanometrology.

In the international metrology community, NMIJ participates in the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) and related key comparisons administered by the BIPM, maintaining Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) listed internationally.

NMIJ collaborates with national and international partners to advance metrology, support industry, and ensure trust in measurements used in commerce, regulation, and research.
