Respirators that require NIOSH approval under 42 CFR Part 84 display an approval number on the product or packaging, often starting with TC-84A. The approval covers the device design and filters, such as filtering facepiece respirators (for example, N95, N99, N100 ratings), elastomeric respirators, and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs). The NIOSH ratings designate oil resistance and filtration efficiency, with common classes including N (not resistant to oil), R (some oil resistance), and P (oil-proof), and filtration levels of 95, 99, or 100 percent.
