NIJ standards are developed by the National Institute of Justice, a research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. These standards are primarily focused on improving the effectiveness of law enforcement and criminal justice technologies. They establish performance requirements for a wide range of equipment used by law enforcement and corrections professionals, ensuring that products meet specific, rigorous criteria.

The most well-known NIJ standards relate to body armor. These standards, often referred to as NIJ ballistic resistance standards, classify body armor based on the type of ammunition it can stop. The classifications range from Type IIA, II, and III, which protect against handgun rounds, to Type III and IV, which are designed to stop rifle rounds. These standards are crucial for officer safety, providing a benchmark for manufacturers and a reliable indicator for purchasing agencies.

Beyond body armor, NIJ also develops standards for other equipment, including less-lethal weapons, riot control agents, and forensic technologies. The development process typically involves extensive research, testing, and collaboration with industry, government agencies, and subject matter experts.
