In the context of rendering, when a display tries to show an image, it needs to determine the color or intensity of each pixel on the screen. This often involves sampling pixels from a higher-resolution source image. If the source image resolution does not perfectly match the display resolution, techniques like interpolation or, in its simplest form, direct pixel sampling are employed. Simple pixel sampling involves taking the value of the nearest source pixel without any blending or averaging.

This technique is fundamental in understanding how images are represented and manipulated digitally. It forms the basis for many image processing algorithms, texture mapping in 3D graphics, and the very act of displaying an image on a screen. The accuracy and fidelity of the sampled pixel can significantly impact the final visual output. While simple pixel sampling is fast and computationally inexpensive, it can lead to aliasing artifacts, where jagged edges or stair-step patterns become visible, especially when scaling images up or down.
