Münzenkunde, also known as numismatics, is the study and collection of coins, paper money, tokens, and related objects. This academic discipline encompasses a wide range of historical, artistic, and economic aspects. Numismatists examine coins for their origin, date of issue, ruler or issuing authority, denomination, and artistic design. The metallurgical composition of coins also plays a significant role, offering insights into trade routes and economic conditions of past eras.

The practice of collecting coins, or numismatics as a hobby, has existed for centuries. Early collectors often focused on ancient Greek and Roman coins, prized for their historical significance and aesthetic appeal. Over time, the scope of numismatics has broadened to include medieval coinage, world coins, tokens, medals, and even ancient currencies that were not necessarily coins in the modern sense, such as cowrie shells or ingots.

Numismatics provides valuable information for historians, archaeologists, and economists. Coinage can serve as primary source material, offering evidence of political changes, economic policies, religious beliefs, and cultural practices. The discovery of hoards of coins has frequently illuminated historical events and trade networks. Furthermore, the study of coin designs can reveal evolving artistic styles and propaganda techniques.
