Mökkirakenteet

Mökkirakenteet refers to the various structures found at a Finnish summer cottage, or 'mökki'. These structures are typically built to serve specific functions related to leisure and outdoor living. The most prominent structure is, of course, the main cottage building itself, which often provides sleeping quarters, a kitchen area, and a living space. Beyond the main cottage, other common mökkirakenteet include saunas, which are a quintessential part of Finnish culture and are almost always present. These saunas can range from simple wood-fired smoke saunas to more modern electric versions, often housed in a separate small building.

Another frequent addition is a woodshed, used to store firewood for the sauna and heating. Depending on the location and amenities of the mökki, additional structures might be present. These can include a separate sleeping cabin, known as a 'aittaan', offering additional accommodation, especially for guests. Boat shelters or docks are common near lakes or rivers, providing protection for watercraft and a place for fishing activities. Simple outdoor toilets or composting toilets are also a part of the mökkirakenteet, particularly in more traditional or remote settings. Sometimes, a small barbecue shelter or a dedicated grilling area ('grillikatos') is constructed. The overall design and materials used for mökkirakenteet often reflect a connection to nature, with wood being a prevalent material. These structures collectively enhance the functionality and enjoyment of the mökki experience.
