MöSuurt

MöSuurt is a type of stone monument found primarily in the island of Saaremaa, Estonia. These ancient structures are characterized by their unique, square-shaped design and varying sizes, ranging from several meters to over 10 meters in length. The name "möSuurt" is derived from the Estonian language, "mö" meaning "stone" and "suurt" meaning "great".

The möSuurt monuments were built during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, approximately between 1200-600 BCE. The exact purpose and meaning of these structures remains a topic of debate among historians and archaeologists. Some theories propose that they served as boundary markers, while others suggest they were used for ritual or ceremonial purposes.

Archaeological excavations have revealed that möSuurt monuments typically consist of a large stone slab, often measuring up to 2 meters in length, and a smaller area typically found at one end of the slab. These smaller areas are thought to be some type of offering or grave marker. MöSuurt stones have also been discovered in adjacent valleys, suggesting a possible connection to the local landscape.

Due to their scarcity and unique characteristics, möSuurt monuments are an essential component of the cultural heritage in Saaremaa, Estonia. Unfortunately, many of the originals are now missing due to centuries of erosion, human activities, or societal collapse. Only a handful of these ancient stones remain, serving as a testament to the early cultures that once inhabited the island.
