Mõõtesilindri

Mõõtesilinder, often translated as measuring cylinder or graduated cylinder, is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. It is a tall, cylindrical container with markings along its side, called graduations, which indicate specific volumes. These markings allow for relatively precise measurements of liquid volumes compared to other containers like beakers or flasks, which are designed for mixing or heating rather than accurate measurement.

Measuring cylinders are typically made of glass, such as borosilicate glass for chemical resistance and thermal shock resistance, or clear plastic like polypropylene for durability and to reduce breakage. The base of a measuring cylinder is usually wide and stable to prevent it from tipping over easily. The top is often open, with a lip or spout to facilitate pouring.

The graduations on a measuring cylinder are calibrated at a specific temperature, usually 20 degrees Celsius. When reading the volume of a liquid, it is important to do so at eye level and to note the bottom of the meniscus, which is the curved upper surface of the liquid. The accuracy of a measuring cylinder varies depending on its size and the fineness of its graduations. Smaller cylinders generally offer greater precision. They are essential tools in chemistry, biology, and other scientific fields for tasks such as preparing solutions, titrations, and general liquid handling where volume accuracy is important.
